Unifying mission-critical communications – how now & what’s next -Standards/AI/ML

Introduction: Presented by Kevin Graham — Director, Australasian Critical Communications Forum & Managing Director Global Digital Solutions

A brief overview of the ongoing work of the international TCCA (ACCF as regional representative for TCCA) and affiliated organisations who are driving progress on global standardisation for mission/business-critical requirements in land mobile radio and mobile broadband (4G/5G and satellite). Understand the status of standardisation and new initiatives underpinning the global standardisation, conformance and interworking efforts and also assisting with applications solution and ecosystem evolution. Hear how these benefit organisations who wish to augment existing wireless solutions with current and future generations of mobile broadband or are contemplating a transition to mobile broadband solutions.

Voice & Data interoperability, multi-bearer switching using artificial intelligence & application integration for mission/business-critical applications
Presented by Sohan Domingo
— Director, Australasian Critical Communications Forum and Head of Product Management – Unified Solutions, Tait Communications

In this session Sohan Domingo will present that the future of mission-critical networks will involve a combination of different bearer networks for voice communication between users in the field and control centre operators. A bearer combination of this sort needs a redundant and robust integrated backend infrastructure along with the front-end vehicle communication components to support voice interoperability between multiple bearers such as satellite, LMR, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LTE. This will enable field personnel using applications such as MCPTT/PTT to communicate over cellular service or other available bearer networks using a concept called smart bearer switching when there is no LMR coverage.

The presentation will also address how multi-bearer switching between networks using software-based edge computing AI/ML algorithms provides enhanced communication services in a mission-critical and non-mission-critical environment, especially areas where there is no LMR or LTE coverage.

Sohan’s presentation will also highlight the need of an application middleware solution to solve the issue of data interoperability faced in various industries today, especially when industries implement applications from disparate vendors which do not integrate with each other. The presentation will address some of the latest implementations of applications in cloud that can be provided as SaaS to industries such as public safety, utilities, transportation, etc and the optimum approach to implement cloud vs edge computing. Sohan will also highlight the use of the data integration platform to solve critical issues faced in the industry, especially around public safety today — for example, receiving and sharing location information of portable radios in field to external applications like CAD. In addition, the presentation will highlight how a simple application middleware can be developed into a smarter integration platform with artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Closing & Q&APresented by Kevin Graham

Director, Australasian Critical Communications Forum & Managing Director, Global Digital Solutions
Kevin Graham is a qualified Electronics Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in project and systems engineering, sales/marketing, and general and executive management for private and public multinational companies. For the past 15 years, he has run his own executive management and engineering consulting company Global Digital Solutions. The majority of his working career has been spent in the telecommunications sector and more recently in the mining/processing sectors. His work has exposed him to a broad spectrum of markets and geographies within enterprise, industrial, mining, government, public safety, defence, rail and other transport and utility customer bases. Kevin established and chaired two regional industry associations for TETRA & Critical Communication in Australasia (2001) and North America (2012), was past president and board member of the Australian Radio Site Owners and Users Associations (now ARCIA) and remains a director on the Australasian TETRA and Critical Communications Forum. He also holds executive positions and is on the boards of four resource and industrial mineral processing sector organisations and other companies in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.
Director, ACCF/Head of Product Management - Unified Solutions, Tait Communications
Sohan Domingo comes with 14 years’ experience in designing, deploying and selling solutions to public safety agencies in countries such as Australia, Germany and the Middle East. He is currently the software Product Manager at Tait responsible for Tait’s software strategy. He comes with deep public safety software knowledge such as in CAD (computer aided dispatching), mobility solutions for first responders, agency interoperability, MCPTT (mission-critical push-to-talk) and NG000. He has worked in various organisations such as Siemens, Intergraph, Motorola and Nokia. His understanding spans across end-to-end solution offering for critical industries in the field of LTE, software applications, mobility all the way to radio (P.25/Tetra). His passion and interest is in bridging the technology gap between legacy voice systems and application interoperability in a mission-critical environment.
